Canon point: Post-game by two months.
Importing development from old game? Nope!
Background: Cilan | Shadow Triad
Changes from canon, if AU: HOKAY This is gonna be long. Longer then Scott, I reckon. So get nice and soft over there, mod peoples.
The first change, well... not change for him, but this is written with the Male Main Character, Black, as the main character of the game, and he's also a breederdude instead of a trainerdude, he just beats the gyms because he wants to stop Team Plasma. Also, the game version is White - this only effects a few lines of dialouge, but I thought I'd still include this at the top. Because I dunno where else to put it. Yeah.
It all began as the trio were young teenagers, exploring the world as newbie trainers. What about their parents? Do they really matter in this universe? Each carrying an Elemental Monkey, they had gone to the Lostlorn Forest to see if they could find any rare Pokemon. And they found one.
It was a Zoroark, the event one to be exact. It thought that the three kids wanted to hurt her kid, and thus attacked them with illusions, as well as with claws. This gave Cilan a phobia of fire as well as Zoroark in general. He also got a scar on his chest, which he always keeps covered up in public and most of the time in private.
The three only didn't die because of a dude called Ghetsis. He saved them, but only because he knew he could use them to help with the whole Team Plasma stuff.
And so they trained up as guardians of the in-progress Castle for Lord N. They got matching outfits, and grew to see Ghetsis as... well, a guardian. Almost a father. He just saw them as guards and pawns, but whatever.
During this time, Cilan needed to grow and get over his nightmares. He knew he wasn't a fitting guardian if he remained such a scared person, especially with Chili and his Pansear around training their fire attacks. So he started to pretend, any time that he went out, that he was somebody completly different. And this started to work. His brothers noticed this, and they'd also had the same idea.
This didn't work as planned, due to Cilan still being a ball of nerves. He didn't remain a confident, outgoing guy... he turned into the guy we know from canon, the calm between fire and water.
About three years before canon began, Ghetsis came to the three brothers with a plan. They'd become gym leaders (in whatever way they wished) and infiltrate the league. Eventually, they'd be a cornerstone of getting people to release their Pokemon. Simple, right?
Well, it took two years, and they fufilled step one. They had a gym. And a cafe to boot! Cilan found this a rewarding career, though, and started to ponder what he wanted. Of course, at this point, he had a job, somebody to help him along, and no conflict. It was almost... fun. But not, he had to keep up his fake persona and report to Ghetsis whenever he could.
So, a year later, a guy comes around called Black. Unusual for a challenger, he challenges all three gym leaders, with his hand-bred team of starters. And he wins, first go. The kid knows his Pokemon, and they know him.
Canon, from here on, goes normally. Well, as normally as the Shadow Triad/Gym Leaders theory, anyhow. The Gym Leaders are contacted and follow Black, taking him to N and/or Ghetsis whenever needed. Meanwhile, they went to the cafe whenever they needed to work/fight off another challenger. It went pretty well, and nobody figured it out. Lucky, huh?!
Off-screen, after the battle with N and while Black was returning home, however... the Triad were told to not follow Ghetsis, after they distracted Cheren. And Cilan asked him... well, why. He didn't get an answer, but his self-doubt over everything reached a breaking point that day. He started to have trouble concentrating, and didn't know what to do. Except, y'know, wait to give Black one of the three orbs they got trusted with. But that hasn't happened yet. That's the future. In fact, I've got a lot about his future written down, for my webcomic I'm making about him. :D
Personality:
Cilan is a very two-sided man. He's taught himself how to... well, be somebody he wasn't at first.
For those who meet Cilan the Gym Leader, his outer shell, he's one of the three gym leaders you'll meet. And unlike his three brothers, he's neither hot nor cold. He's a balanced person, friendly and optimistic. He is a very nervous person, however - he knows he's not the best battler, and he knows he's not the best at hiding who he really is. This causes him a lot of stress, but he hides most of it under his smile. And the stuff he can't hide? It comes out in his repeating of words, and his general quieter demeanor. When he has the larger picture like this to wonder about, he doesn't worry himself with the smaller odd things.
In his life, his biggest concerns are his brothers, Lord Ghetsis, and Lord N. And, yes, he still thinks of them like this. He's loyal to them, and will protect them with his life, if it comes to that. This is why the three of them - the three Shadow Triad, the three brothers - broke Ghetsis out of prison. When Cilan learned that Ghetsis didn't want them to follow him to wherever he was going, he was broken... he couldn't follow his saviour, and he's been rather sad since. This will come up in Passing.
'Cilan' is just a mask for now, though. He is more of the Shadow Triad member then the Gym Leader, though he's been thinking recently... about if he wants to continue pretending, and which side of him is pretending. This will cause him a lot of drama, but... it'll be up to the game which side he becomes, huh?
Inside, that Shadow Triad member. He thinks of himself as... well, only one of the group. There is no I, only we. He acts a bit colder to people, and tries to get straight to the point. This fails sometimes, however, because he still messes up sometimes. He's not the fastest or the strongest - but he still tries his best, as a Shadow, and wants to become stronger... mentally, especially. He's awfully quiet, but has started to open up as he doubts himself. He's focused, and won't give up on something if he wants to know what's going on - except, of course, if he's told to not continue looking into it by his Lords. And he still believes in the goals of Team Plasma, this stems from his loyalty to Ghetsis. In fact, unless a lot happens to him, this won't be changing.
Abilities:
As a member of the Shadow Triad, Cilan picked up some pretty impressive skills. He seems to have the skill of either really fast moving, or teleporting. I go with the latter with a tiny bit of the former in this interpritation, though - he can teleport at will, but he's also a very fast guy normally. After a lot of training, of course. He's also got great reflexes, and has a bit of a stronger pain threshold. Not much more, but a light Tackle won't affect him much at all.
He's also a Pokemon Gym Leader, even if he only has two Pokemon. These two are the family Lillipup, a young (lv 12) dog-like Pokemon with a powerful bite attack and who can work himself into a frenzy... to bite harder. He also has a Pansage... a green monkey at lv 14 who can use Vine Whip, Fury Swipes, and Lick to attack. It can also work itself into a frenzy.
He can also cook rather well... and there's the whole acting like somebody he's not thing. He's good at that.
